St Kilda Road Bike Lanes

St Kilda Road Bike Lanes

Separated kerbside bike lanes on Melbourne’s busiest boulevard

Working collaboratively with Ace Contractors and Major Road Projects Victoria, we helped build new bike lanes that separate drivers and cyclists along St Kilda Road in Melbourne. The project included design of the bike lanes, intersection upgrades and new road signage and line marking. Sustainability was at the core of this project, from providing improved cycling facilities to material selection maximising recycled content.

Background

The project scope involved building separated kerbside bike lanes with bike markings along St Kilda Road from Linlithgow Avenue to Dorcas Street, and Toorak Road to St Kilda Junction, a total of 3.1km of road. This resulted in new bike lanes that physically separate drivers and cyclists, improving safety for the 3,500 cyclists that currently use St Kilda Road each day by eliminating the risk of being struck by car doors and reducing the risk of crashes.

The project objectives include:

  • Improve road safety for cyclists by constructing the new bike lanes separated from the traffic, and provide safe and consistent cycling infrastructure along St Kilda Road.
  • Improve transport capacity along the St Kilda Road corridor while enhancing the iconic boulevard and precinct’s vibrancy.
  • Lower the risk and severity of crashes involving a cyclist by providing a separate bike lane for the cyclist away from the running traffic lane.

What we did

The key scope items include the design and construction of the following:

  • Separated kerbside bike lanes with bike markings, including coloured bike lane at conflict points
  • Separator concrete barrier between bike lane and parking lane
  • Provision of bike storage boxes with turn arrows at signalised intersections
  • Modification to the existing traffic signals to upgrade the new signalised bike crossing, and new bike lanterns at signalised intersections.
  • Resurfacing of bike lanes
  • Removal of kerb outstands and reinstatement of DDA compliant crossing
  • Upgrade of wider shared use path crossing at intersection
  • New road signage and line markings
  • Utility service relocation.

Key interfaces of the design and construction works include signalised/unsignalized intersections, private property accesses and on-street kerbside parking along both sides of the St Kilda Road corridor.

Outcomes

The separated kerbside bike lanes bring improvement to cyclist safety. This improved road layout can encourage more people to opt for the greener commute of cycling.
