Background

The Angliss Stock Bridge is a multi-span Truss bridge managed by the City of Melbourne. Opened in 1941, the bridge is of historical and architectural significance to Melbourne. The bridge crosses the Maribyrnong River and forms part of the Maribyrnong River Trail in Kensington, Victoria.

What we did

In 2021, pitt&sherry was engaged by the City of Melbourne to provide a Level 3 structural inspection of this bridge. Following the inspection, rectification works were recommended for the defective truss chord batten plates, in particular at the nodes of bottom chords and top chords. These rectification works would enable the bridge’s loading capacity conforms to current design standards and safely sustain a pedestrian live load rating of 5kPa.

In 2023, pitt&sherry completed the Detailed Design for the remediation works to the truss chord members. Then in 2024, pitt&sherry provided technical support during the construction phase, which was performed by Council’s appointed Contractor - G&G Engineering.

Outcomes

The repair works were completed with minimal disruptions to the public and river traffic by separating the bridge works into sections, temporary partial narrowing of the bridge walkway and using a barge and scaffold set up underneath the bridge structure. The bridge repairs were completed in December 2024 and reopened fully to the public.

Our long-term Civil Engineering support for the City of Melbourne helps provide essential infrastructure services within the heart of Melbourne. The project exemplifies our ability to deliver end-to-end Bridge Engineering services that provide value to our clients and support the upkeep of historical structures like the Angliss Stock Bridge.
