Circular Economy for City of Launceston

Circular Economy for City of Launceston

Establishing a baseline carbon footprint for the council’s operational assets, providing decarbonisation measures using circular economy strategies

pitt&sherry performed a detailed analysis of the carbon footprint of the Launceston City Councils (LCC) operations resulting, amongst other areas, from methane production at the LCC waste centre The analysis was to identify potential carbon liabilities and financial implications of such for the council. The project delivered a list of recommendations for adaptation and carbon reduction. The project team adopted circular economy strategies as part of the mitigation plan. Amongst some of the recommendations were to use methane emissions for power generation.

Project aim

The aim was to mitigate risk associated with high emissions of operational assets for the council. Particularly methane related emissions in their waste centre. The project would identify priority areas of concern, material impact to council (environmental, social and economic) and risk mitigation strategies.

What we did

Adapting to the Carbon Tax pitt&sherry performed a detailed analysis of the carbon footprint of the Launceston City Councils (LCC) operations resulting mainly from methane production at the LCC waste centre. Our analysis was intended to deal with new legislative changes created by alterations in Federal Government policy. We analysed the split between legacy and non-legacy waste streams and the anticipated future production of methane and hence carbon liabilities for the council. Our analysis extended to the financial implications of these under a carbon tax regime and recommendations for dealing with (reducing) the impact on council budgets through increased use of the methane for power generation.

Outcomes

The project outcomes included:

  • Carbon baseline for council scope 1,2 emissions
  • Risk assessment
  • Reduction plan
